The Earth Triplicity (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) is represented by the nervous temperament more especially noticed through Virgo and Capricorn, exhibiting alert, restless, worried, agitated, neurasthenic characteristics, with disposition to rheumatism and chronic disorders. The earthly signs represent the physical and temporal states all of which produce artistic, imaginative, studious and organizing tendencies.
Earthy types are literally down to earth. They are practical, cautious and reliable. They lack imagination, but are vital for putting into effect the orders of fire signs, the ideas of air signs and the dreams of water signs.
Earth signs are practical but cautious. They are down to earth, can be stubborn (firmly rooted) and function best through the physical level.
Related HOUSES : The 2nd (possessions, finances), 6th (occupation), & 10th (recognition, environment) houses are naturally ruled by Earth signs and are considered the Houses of Substance or the Possessive Houses. Many planets in these houses makes the native stable, reliable, and practical.

In Medical Astrology and Astro-Meteorology the Earth element is of the humour Melancholic, being cold and dry. Planets that are such are Mercury and Saturn.
TAURUS: Fixed Earth
Taurus: Some might say "stuck" (Fixed). Slow to get moving, but impossible to stop. It is also the most sensual sign in the zodiac. Venus-ruled Taurus likes its physical pleasures, especially eating. People with a strong Taurus emphasis in their horoscopes don’t really eat. They graze. Put a plate of little snacks near them at a party and, well, you had better get another plate for everyone else.
Getting someone with strong Taurus placements to make a fast decision is very difficult. They take their sweet time, but once decided, you cannot budge them from it.
The house with Taurus on the cusp (beginning) shows the place in your life where you are most attached to physical things and pleasures, as well as where you tend to never give in. It can also show where you can be rigid and blocked.
VIRGO: Mutable Earth
Virgo: This is the sign of work. People with strong Virgo placements in their horoscope always have to keep busy, usually in the area of life indicated by the section of the chart where Virgo is placed. Virgo is also the sign of details – getting lost because of scrutiny. Not being able to see the forest for the trees. Known for being super-critical and picky, they are as hard on themselves as they are on others.
If Taurus is raw, unused earth, Mutable Virgo is the garden. Earth that has been worked and can now be fruitful. Virgo is called the sign of the Virgin, but this is used in referring to its standard approach to things. Virgo tends to act as if it’s always the first time.
The house with Virgo on the cusp (beginning) shows the place in your life where you tend to be most attentive to details and are likely to put things in a logical, orderly manner. It also can indicate an area where you can provide services to others. For now, I will leave it to your imagination what Virgo means when it’s on the house of sex.
CAPRICORN: Cardinal Earth
Capricorn: Taurus is raw, basic resources. Virgo is the garden where they are worked on. Capricorn is the harvest of previous work. You reap what you have sown. Virgo is the best sign for details. Capricorn is the second best. But Capricorn does something Virgo usually finds difficult. It organizes all those little details into a whole structure. And being Cardinal instead of Mutable, Capricorn can lead.
This, of course, refers only to the nature of the individual signs. Everyone has every sign somewhere in their horoscope, and everything in the chart has to be taken into consideration. That’s why we can get some Virgos who can lead, and some Capricorns who are totally disorganized. However, that is not the trend.
The house with Capricorn on the cusp shows one of the areas of your life where your defenses tend to be up, where you tend to build up, and where you think you are in control. The same can be said of where Saturn is placed.
Since we tend to be fearful or stifled in the area of our lives where Capricorn or Saturn is active, this is where we usually try to shore up our defenses and constantly improve things. Consequently, these are the places where we can be the most serious and ambitious.
CLASSICAL RULERSHIPS (traditional astrology)
This set of signs is ruled by Venus by day and Moon by night. Considered cold and dry.
The Capricorn triplicity comprises Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn – three nocturnal signs. It might be argued that Mercury should take a part in ruling this triplicity because of its dominion over Gemini, but the intrinsically dry nature of Mercury makes it uncomfortable in the moist nocturnal triplicity, so the Moon, who delights under such conditions, especially at night, is substituted. Saturn, the diurnal ruler of Capricorn is also substituted for Mars which is better placed in the nocturnal sect.
Aries trigon – Sun, Jupiter, Saturn
Cancer trigon – Venus, Mars, Moon
Libra trigon – Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter
Capricorn trigon – Venus, Moon, Mars
Most early astrologers used all three planets, rotating their priority by day and night, but many later ones, including Lilly, chose to use only the principal rulers. Perhaps they rejected the convoluted logic that lay behind the definition of sect, or perhaps they were confused by Ptolemy who only mentions two rulers for the Aries and Capricorn triplicities, yet mentions three rulers for the others.
